Learn about Diamonds
Before you start diamond shopping, you want to have an understanding of what you're buying. Diamonds may appear to be all the same, but there is important criteria to look at when buying such as cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, so you can select your diamond based on the same criteria jewellers use to grade them.

Shape

Shape

Acting as a prism, a diamond can divide light into a spectrum of colours and reflect this light as colourful flashes called fire. Just as when looking through coloured glass, colour in a diamond will act as a filter, and will diminish the spectrum of colour emitted. The less colour in a diamond, the more colourful the fire, and the better the colour grade.

Diamonds are graded on the GIA color scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). At either end of the scale, diamonds are very costly because of their rarity, although not necessarily their beauty. At Atlantis Diamonds, you can choose from a wide range of diamond colors.

Clarity

Clarity

The more clear a diamond is, the more rare it is. Most diamonds contain natural "inclusions" that look like tiny crystals. These are the diamond's birthmarks, making each stone unique. The number, size and position of these inclusions affects the value. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) clarity scale ranges from Fl (flawless) to I3 (many inclusions visible to the naked eye). We recommend that you select an "clean" diamond, one that has no inclusions visible to the unaided eye. An excellent value, diamonds of this clarity are much less expensive than IF- or FL-grade diamonds and typically do not contain visible inclusions that detract from the beauty of the diamond. However, if you'd rather not compromise on clarity yet are budget conscious, choose a diamond with a good cut and G or H colour.

  • FL or IF Flawless, Internally Flawless: No internal or external flaws. Internally Flawless: No internal flaws. Very rare and beautiful diamonds.
  • VVS1 or VVS2 Very, Very Slightly Included: Very difficult to see inclusions under 10x magnification. An excellent quality diamond.
  • VS1 or VS2 Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are not typically visible to the unaided eye. Less expensive than the VVS1 or VVS2 grades.
  • SI1 or SI2 Slightly Included: Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification, and may be visible with the unaided eye. A good diamond value.
  • I1 or I2 Included: If you are intested in saving and are willing to sacrifice qualtiy then these may be for you.
